The Biomechanics and Soft Robotics research activities in the Department of Applied Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi encompass a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research at the interface of mechanics, biology, materials science, and robotics. The research focuses on the fundamental mechanics of biological tissues and systems, biomechanics of injury and tissue damage, bio-inspired mechanical systems, soft and compliant materials, and the development of advanced soft robotic technologies. The activities involve a combination of analytical and theoretical modelling, computational mechanics, experimental characterization, and data-driven approaches to investigate complex biological and soft-material behaviour. Specific areas of interest include the mechanics of soft active materials, large-deformation and instability phenomena in electro-magneto-mechanically coupled systems, wearable and assistive robotics, muscle-power augmentation, and intelligent soft robotic systems. These efforts are supported by specialized experimental facilities for mechanical characterization and micro-/nano-scale investigations, fostering interdisciplinary research aimed at advancing both the fundamental understanding of biological and soft-material mechanics and their translation into innovative biomedical, rehabilitation, and robotic applications.
