MTech in Engineering Analysis and Design | Department of Applied Mechanics

The MTech in Engineering Analysis and Design (EA&D) is a flagship educational programme for the Department of Applied Mechanics at IIT Delhi. The EA&D curriculum includes graduate-level courses in fundamental topics like Advanced Solid and Fluid Mechanics, application-oriented courses like Advanced Bio-Mechanics and Environmental Fluid Flow, computational mechanics-oriented courses like Finite Element Method and Computational Fluid Dynamics, and modern courses like Deep Learning and Probabilistic Machine Learning that is at the intersection of Data Science and Computational Mechanics. The curriculum also includes a course on Product Design where students get hands-on experience in developing products by using modern computational (e.g., finite element, machine learning) and experimental techniques (e.g., 3D printing). The students who join the EA&D program will have to complete a set of core courses, program electives, open electives, and a project.

We also offer high-value assistantship-based MTech degree. This is a slow-paced program spanning over 3 years. The selected candidates are supposed to devote their time in selected labs and receive Rs. 22,000.00/- as a scholarship for 3 years. The courses and credit requirements are the same as the regular MTech program.

Admission Process

Admission to the EA&D is based on GATE-score through the COAP. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the program, we accept applications from all GATE disciplines. However, we only consider students with coming from a ‘Mechanical Science’ oriented qualifying degree that includes but are not limited to BTech/ BE from Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering and Computational Mechanics, and other related disciplines. Note that the criteria can potentially change every year and this is only to provide a broad idea about the expectation.

HVA candidates will have to appear for an additional round of interview. The final selection is based on the GATE score and interview.

Course Structure

Every EA&D student at IIT Delhi has to complete a minimum of 52 credits, including 5 core courses (16 credits), one soft core (3 credits), 4 program electives, 2 open electives, and a project. Please refer to IIT Delhi’s courses of study for further details.
